As adults, it can be difficult to prioritize the things we love–especially when we have a family whose interests seem to trump our own. However, with self-care growing in the spotlight, the need to make time for our passions is being looked upon as less of a luxury and more of a necessity.

However, even without the self-care movement, there are still several reasons you should consider taking adult ballet classes.

Why You Should Take Adult Ballet Classes

“I see dance being used as communication between body and soul to express what is too deep to find for words.” -Ruth St. Denis

1. Ballet is a Great Form of Exercise

Adult ballet classes are a great form of exercise that, for many of us, doesn’t actually feel like exercise (at least not until we’re rubbing down our sore muscles the next day). Ballet is a whole-body workout. Not only is it a great source of cardio exercise, but it is also fantastic for strength training, balance, and coordination. While traditional adult ballet classes often require that you have some ballet experience, barre fitness classes allow adults a ballet-style workout without having to have knowledge of ballet technique.

Ballet helps to increase flexibility, coordination, and strength, all of which are important to maintain regardless of age. Done properly, this kind of training can help reduce injuries and increase mobility that many adults experience as they age.

2. Ballet Promotes Mental Wellness.

As with most forms of exercise, ballet helps to release endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. For adults, adult ballet classes are also a good excuse to get out of the house, break away from the day-to-day responsibilities, socialize, and let out emotions in a healthy, productive way. All of these things can help to boost mood and improve attitude.

3. Ballet Can Help Improve Energy

Because of its positive benefits on mental and physical health, another benefit of adult ballet classes is that they can help to improve energy.

4. Adult Ballet Classes Provide Opportunities to Socialize

Adult friendships are difficult to begin and maintain. However, adult ballet classes give you an excuse to get together with other adults who are passionate about dance. It provides a fun, easy environment to socialize and interact with others.

5. Dancing Ballet Can Help Improve Self-Esteem

Adult ballet classes also provide the benefit of helping to improve self-esteem. Regardless of skill level, adult ballet classes can help to improve self-esteem by improving physical health and providing a structured, positive environment for self-expression. As your skills and technique progress, you’ll find yourself feeling a sense of pride and confidence as you execute skills you couldn’t–or that were rusty–before.

Final Thoughts

At Central Utah Ballet, we know that it can be difficult to make a commitment to adult ballet classes. That’s why our adult ballet classes are non-sequential, allowing for drop-ins at any time. Come when it’s convenient for you, or buy an unlimited monthly pass to come as often as you’d like. Explore our classes online or drop in today!

Do you feel you’ve plateaued in your ballet career? Or are you simply just not improving as quickly as you’d hoped? It’s important not to skip ahead to skills we’re not flexible or strong enough for. Instead, follow these proven tips to elevate your ballet career.

4 Tips for Getting Better at Ballet

1. Practice, Practice, Practice

If you are serious about getting better, it isn’t enough to wish it. Ballet shouldn’t end when you go home. The most common advice you will receive about improving your ballet skills is to practice whenever you have the chance. In class, identify skills that require more work to solidify and do those at home. If you don’t have a mirror, record yourself doing them so that you can see how you look. In addition to practicing, consider cross-training by adding conditioning to your regime. Though doing ab workouts are never fun, your strength will lift you to new heights as you jump higher and hold positions longer.

2. Come Prepared

The best way we can come prepared for class might be the first that comes to mind. If you want to improve quickly, make sure to take time beforehand to memorize essential ballet terminology. The faster we can mentally recall positions, the more focus we can put into the form and correct positioning. By learning the terminology outside of class, we spend more time in class getting feedback on form and technique instead of figuring out what we are supposed to do.

Stretching beforehand is another great way to maximize class time. If you come to class still needing to limber up, it may take half the class before you’re loose enough to perform skills at your peak. Consistent stretching outside of class will also ensure that you are reaching your potential in training. Additionally, consider doing breathing exercises before class to loosen your muscles and relax so you can better ease into your moves.

3. Let Go of Embarrassment

Often the only one holding you back is yourself. Don’t be afraid to fail because the only people that never fail are those that never tried. In such a competitive sport, it’s easy to get discouraged. Don’t let criticism get to you. Your coaches wouldn’t be worth your money if they never gave you constructive feedback. Seek out their feedback every class to fine-tune your dancing. Remember that with every correction, you are getting closer to being the best ballerina you can be. Trust in the process and keep your chin up.

4. Focus On Your Goal

Scientific research has shown that mental visualization can be a very effective tool for growth! Use it to help you correct your form on a specific move or execute a routine smoother. When you have downtime, run through skills in your head multiple times that you are struggling with. If you see yourself do it in your head, it will make the physical execution even easier. Focusing on your goal also makes the process seem less difficult. When you are struggling with motivation, remind yourself why you are doing this. Picture yourself in the coveted lead role of The Nutcracker, or whatever position you are aspiring to, and take a minute to visualize how it will feel. When you wholeheartedly focus on a goal, the sky is the limit.

Final Thoughts

In short, if you are looking for a simple fix, we don’t have the answer for you. Ballet is a difficult sport that requires dedication and perseverance. As with any sport, the time you’ve spent practicing is reflected in your performance. Keep focused, work hard, and you’ll get to where you want to

Some students are intimidated by ballet because instructors sometimes seem like they’re speaking a foreign language–because that’s just what it is! Ballet terms are French, and classical ballet instructors will use this terminology to create structure and help students memorize movements and sequences.

Below are some of the essential, must-know ballet terms for ballet students.

Adagio: Slow, continuous, gentle movements. Adagio helps to improve a dancer’s balance, strength, and lines.

Allegro: Fast, brisk, and energetic movements. Usually associated with jumps.

Allongé: “Elongated.” This is an adjective that describes poses that are stretched and elongated, like an arabesque.

Arabesque: A pose in which the dancer stands on one leg with the other leg extended straight behind in a right angle.

Arriére: “Backwards.” This indicated a move with backward movement.

Ballet Technique: This refers to a set foundation of principles and methods of movement, form, and function used in ballet.

Ballerina: The term ballerina originally referred to a rank of the principal dancer in a ballet company. Not every female dancer in the ballet company was considered a ballerina. In common terms, leading ballet dancers are typically called “principal dancers” and “ballerina” is used loosely for ballet dancers. “Ballerino” was typically used to refer to male ballerinas.

Ballon. Ballon means “to bounce,” which refers to showing lightness and ease in jumps. Ballon describes the quality of jump, not the height.

Barre: The horizontal bar used to support dancers. Barre exercises are part of every ballet class.

Batterie: Batterie describes all steps within beats as a group.

Battement tendu: Extending your leg, brushing the leg across the floor and pointing your foot.

Devant: “In front.” Indicates a move or position in which the leg or arm is placed in front of the body.

En pointe: Ballet technique that refers to dancing on the tips of the toes, in which a ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet within pointe shoes.

Grand jete: A forward jump with a split.

Pas de deux: A dance for two people, or duet, in classical ballet.

Passé: A passing movement in which one foot passes in back or in front of the knee of the supporting leg, or one leg passes the other in the air.

Piqué turn: A pirouette where the dancer steps onto pointe or demi-pointe and raises the other leg in any position.

Pirouette: A complete turn or series of turns on one foot, usually en pointe or demi pointe.

Plié: Bending the knees in either a grand plié (full bending of the knees) or a demi-pliè (half bending of the knees) with the legs turned out from the hips and the knees open over the toes.

Port de bras: “Movement of the arms.” This refers to the movement of the arms from one position to another.

Relevé: A movement in which the dancer starts in a demi-plié and rises up to the pointe or demi-pointe on one foot or both feet.

Rond de jambe: A circular movement of the leg with the working leg in the air or with a foot touching the floor.

Soutenu: “Sustained.” A movement in which the dancer turns in a sus-sous or en pointe in fifth position, landing on the opposite foot.

Tendu: One foot slides across the floor with toes touching the floor. Both legs remain straight as the extended leg returns to the position from which it was extended.

Variation: A solo in classical ballet

For those who weren’t raised in the ballet community, watching a ballet can seem foreign—and maybe even boring. Ballet is a nuanced art that can make it more difficult to appreciate for some casual observers. However, with the right approach and mindset, anyone can learn to appreciate ballet.

7 Steps to Appreciate Ballet

Ballet is such a beautiful, technical, and expressive form of art. If you have the right tools to appreciate ballet, it can change your life! But how can you learn to appreciate ballet if you’re not sure where to start? Below are 7 tips.

Step 1: Know What Makes Ballet Beautiful—and Difficult

One of the best ways to learn to appreciate ballet is to understand what makes it both beautiful and difficult. Ballet takes a great deal of skill, strength, and perfectionism. A great dancer will look like they defy gravity and that their limbs are endlessly long. These illusions do not come easily.

Weightlessness: The weightlessness in ballet comes from striking in-air positions faster and holding them longer. This makes the dancer seem to be floating

Lengthening: Appreciating what it takes to meticulously have long, lengthened lines can take just a simple experiment. If you stand and extend your leg to the side, how does it look? Are your toes pointed? How straight? Does your leg look lean and long, and how effortless is it for you to hold your leg in that position? What about your supporting leg? Is that leg lean, long, and pointed as well? What about your torso…and arms? It takes a lot of awareness–and strength!–to maintain those lines through an entire ballet.

Appreciate the Turn: Turns are no small matter in ballet, and there’s more to them than you think. During a turn, watch the supporting leg. The best turns are done without moving from one spot and while maintaining balance throughout the entire motion.

Focus: It isn’t just the movements that matter in ballet. Remember when we said ballet is nuanced? Don’t forget to watch where the dancers are looking. Their line of focus acts almost as an extra limb, providing an extension of their performance.

Step 2: Pick a Ballet to Watch

After you have a basic understanding of what makes ballet beautiful, choose a ballet to watch! You don’t have to fork over the cash for a live ticket–yet–if you aren’t ready. Instead, you can find recordings of famous ballets at the library, on eBay, or even on YouTube. A good place to start is to look for 19th-century classics including Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, or Giselle.

Step 3: Get to Know the Story & the Score

Before you watch the ballet, look up information about the story. Much like how opera can be difficult to follow if you can’t understand the lyrics and don’t know the storyline, ballet can leave some people lost if they aren’t sure how to interpret the movements and the story. Taking some time to understand the story ahead of time can help you understand which parts of the story the dancers are telling and to understand what the music is expressing at any given time.

Step 4: Read Critics’ Reviews Ahead of Time

Whether you’re watching a live performance or a recording, you’re certain to be able to find critical reviews of the piece online. While some of these reviews may be a little stuffy, some may give you a great perspective of what to look for to appreciate during the ballet.

Step 5: Read up on the Dancers

Sure, you might not yet be engrossed in the ballet world, but wouldn’t you like to know if you’re seeing a world-renowned dancer on stage? Take a moment to read up on the dancers and their backgrounds. Knowing a little bit about the key soloists can give you an additional connection to them as you watch them perform.

Step 6: Get Good Seats

It’s go time! After you’ve done your preparation, you’re ready to watch ballet with a more appreciative eye. Don’t forget to get the right seats for the show (it would be a shame to do all this preparation and not be able to see the dancers). Look for center orchestra or first balcony–this is where the critics usually sit.

Step 7: Appreciate Each Movement

As you watch the ballet, remember that each movement means something. Nothing is done by accident. Walking in a circle could mean the beginning of a journey or trying to find something–or oneself? Take what you know about the story and try to find clues in the dance movements that help to point to that story and to tell it.

Take it a Step Further

After you’ve found a ballet you like, try watching a few different versions. Compare and contrast the staging and the soloists. Do you notice anything different about the dancers? What do you like better in each version? This exercise can help you become more in tune with the nuances of ballet.

If you’re like most ballet dancers, summer means one thing: summer intensives. Summer intensives are an age-old tradition where dancers get together for several weeks of rigorous training and exceptional practice during the summer months when other distractions like school are minimal.

Tips for Making The Most of Your Summer Ballet Intensive

Summer intensives are a huge part of growing as a dancer. They are integral not only in keeping your skills and conditioning primed during summer months, but are also an opportunity to make great strides in your dance and performance technique. They are a wonderful opportunity to experience new instructors, choreographers, and dancers you might not otherwise have met. For most dancers, ballet summer intensives are an important annual ritual for growing in training and technique.

These programs often fly by and feel like they are over before they begin. Below are tips and advice to help make the most of your ballet summer intensive:

Pick a Program that Challenges You

Summer intensives don’t last long, so you want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your experience. This means stretching your comfort zone and being open to new instructors, techniques, and dance styles that you don’t experience during your regular ballet classes. Summer intensives are a time for growth, so pick a program that will offer you just that!

Keep Your Eyes & Ears Open

During summer intensives, listen not only to the corrections you personally receive, but also the corrections given to those dancers around you. Even if the feedback is not directed at you or if you believe you’re already doing it correctly, these little budgets are gold. You never know when an instructor is going to explain something in a way that will really “click,” so keeping your eyes and ears open means you have the greatest opportunity to soak as much information in as possible.

Bring a Journal or Notepad

Summer intensives are called “intensive” for a reason. They are packed with intense training and rigorous practice. Keep a journal or notepad with you to write notes in and review those notes after each session. This will help you better retain the information while also providing you a valuable arsenal of tips to look back on to continue to apply what you learned well after the program is over.

Take Care of Yourself

Nothing can stymie progress from a summer intensive faster than an injury or illness. Take care of your body by getting plenty of rest, eating well, and staying very well hydrated. If you do sustain an injury, let your instructor know. There will still be plenty you can benefit from by attending the intensive, but you’ll want the instructors’ help in modifying how you apply the technique to care for your injury.

Make Friends

The ballet world is surprisingly small, and you’ll likely run into dancers you met from summer intensives long into your ballet career. Remember that relationships matter and first impressions stick. Not to mention ballet is a whole lot more fun when you enjoy the people you are dancing with!

Have Fun

Last but not least, remember to have fun. You are here because you love to dance and are passionate about the art. Remember, ballet is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t burn yourself out. After all, dance without joy is just exercise.

Ballet is a well-rounded, positive activity for children and adults alike. It offers a wide range of mental and physical benefits, including improving strength and flexibility, reducing stress, and improving confidence.

Why is Ballet Good for You? 10 Reasons.

Below are 10 of the top reasons ballet is mentally and physically good for you.

1. Provides Whole Body Workout

Ballet is a full-body workout, engaging all the muscles in your body from your core and legs to back, shoulders, and arms. In addition to being great for strength training, it is also an aerobic activity. This makes ballet a good full-body workout for both children and adults.

2. Offers Stress Relief

Exercises, such as ballet, releases endorphins. These feel-good hormones boost your mood and decrease stress, making ballet an excellent way to decompress. In addition to releasing endorphins, dancing also offers an outlet for expression and communication, which can provide individuals a happier, more positive mindset when faced with adversity.

3. Improves Flexibility

Perhaps one of the most popular reasons ballet is good for you is that it improves flexibility. We’ve all heard of the ballet barre, which is the wooden bar that supports ballerinas as they navigate through a series of stretches and strength training exercises. There are some workouts that are centered entirely around the barre. This portion of a ballet class helps improve flexibility, increasing your range of motion, thus decreasing your likelihood of injury.

4. Increases Discipline

Ballet includes a strict code of discipline. This is true not only in technique, but also uniform—usually down to hairstyle—attitude, and posture. When you dance ballet, you are practicing discipline that will help strengthen this skill in other aspects of life.

5. Improves Balance

Ballet is a great way to improve your balance. Ballet increases core strength and muscle stabilizers, helping the body increase its ability to balance. This can help growing children overcome some of the natural gawkiness that comes with lengthening limbs and growing bodies. For adults taking ballet classes, it can help after body-changing experiences such as childbirth or general aging to help regain balance and grace.

6. Improves Posture

Ballet is also a good way to improve posture. Ballet focuses on lines, angles, strength, and flexibility, all of which contribute to good posture. By exercising these parts of your body and practicing the long, lean lines of ballet, you’ll naturally begin finding yourself sitting and standing with better posture.

7. Provides Social Opportunities

Most people don’t think of ballet as a group sport, but it is! That means ballet offers the same type of socializing opportunities found in many team sports. Dancers engage with other like-minded individuals while strengthening their relationships with each other through trust, communication, shared interest, and teamwork.

8. Increases Energy

Ballet also helps to increase energy. This is because it helps to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues by getting your blood pumping every time you dance. Because it is an aerobic activity, it also helps your cardiovascular and pulmonary systems work more effectively. This helps you increase endurance, giving you more energy throughout the day.

9. Improves Endurance

Like we discussed above, ballet can improve your endurance because of its aerobic benefits. This is also true for the strength-training aspects of ballet. When you dance ballet, you are strengthening your body in multiple ways that help daily tasks and chores come more easily to you, improving your energy and endurance.

10. Nurtures Confidence

Finally, ballet is a great way to nurture your confidence. Because it improves balance, grace, posture, health, and fitness, ballet can not only improve your mental health but also improve your confidence.

What does dance do for a child, and why do so many parents enroll their students in dance lessons?

Engaging your child in extracurricular activities (those “outside of school” activities) is an instinct that comes naturally to most parents. We want to support our children’s development while giving them beneficial outlets for their time and energy.

For many parents and students, the extracurricular activity of choice is dance.

What Does Dance Do for a Child?

While dance can impact each child differently, some outcomes seem universal. Below are some of the top positive benefits dance offers children.

Boosts Confidence

One of the things dance does for a child is increases their confidence. This is true for many extracurricular activities—practice in certain skills brings confidence. However, for dance, it’s even more than that.

Even when you’re dancing someone else’s choreography, dance is personal. It gives you an outlet to bring yourself into the room or onto the stage and say, “this is me.” Practicing this in a safe setting such as dance helps dancers develop and grow their self-confidence.

Improves Fitness

It goes without saying that dance is a physical sport. However, its type of physicality lends itself well to growing children’s bodies. This is because dance not only provides aerobic activity, but also builds and tones muscles, especially those core muscles that support daily movement.

Teaches Teamwork

Dance probably isn’t one of the first activities that comes to mind when you’re thinking of team sports, but dance truly does require this skill.

As part of a dance class or company, children have to rely on the other dancers on stage with them. Each dancer has to be in the right spot and doing the right moves to support the choreography as a whole. For the routine to look synchronized, dancers also have to be at relatively similar levels of expertise.

Dance teaches teamwork because it requires dancers to work together on stage during performances, in rehearsals for staging and practicing choreography, and in developing and mastering techniques alongside their peers.

Encourages Grit

Next on the list of things dance does for a child is encouraging grit. Dance is a commitment—one that extends at least to a several-month-long season and at most to a long-term company relationship. As with every activity, your child will experience times when they want to give up or quit and have to find ways to stay motivated to keep dancing. According to development experts, this skill, called “grit,” is one of the most important indicators of success in children.

If your child is struggling with staying committed to dance, read this recent article on How to Keep Your Child Motivated to Stick With Dance.

Provides Outlet for Expression

Many dancers in their early to late teens face the changes of adolescence that bring a pendulum of emotions. It’s important for them to have an outlet where they feel safe expressing these emotions and helping them to explore and release them instead of bottling them up. For many, dance is an excellent outlet for this.

Drives Discipline

Finally, dance helps children develop discipline. Like many extracurricular activities, dance requires the mastery of certain techniques. This means your child is required to practice certain techniques until they can perform them correctly. This skill means your child will be practicing the skill of discipline.

We are getting to that time of year where some ballet students start to get “ballet burnout.” They may start asking to skip classes so they can spend time with friends, say they are too tired to attend class, or even suggest that they don’t want to dance ballet after all. How do you motivate a child to stick with dance when they are ready to give up?

How to Keep Your Child Motivated to Stick With Dance

There are many reasons to keep your child motivated to “stick with it,” including helping prevent them from having regret when they’re older, teaching them to focus on long-term gratification instead of short-term whims. Among these is teaching your child the important skill of grit, which is the ability to stick with things even when they get tough—and is one of the biggest indicators of success in children, according to researchers.

While grit and sticking with an activity such as dance may not come naturally to children, it is a skill that can be taught!

1. Tell them they need to follow-through for the season.

Often, a child’s desire to quit is short-lived. Let your child know that dance is a commitment, and they need to stick with it for the season—but that at the end of the season, they can quit if they’d like.

It can be tempting to force them to pick it up again the next season, but allowing them to decide to quit or not quit gives your child autonomy and can help them be less likely to quit or give up on an activity mid-season.

2. Remind them they’re part of a team.

Ballet is a team sport. Your child’s company and studio are depending on them for staging choreography, rehearsing, and progressing at the same level as the rest of the company. Talk to your child about the importance of being part of a team and how each member needs to do his or her part for the entire company to succeed.

3. Don’t give in “just this once.”

It can be tempting to give in and let your child skip a class “just this once.” Especially if they beg or negotiate or if you’re just plain too tired to hold the line. However, it can be important to the goal of helping your child stick with dance lessons not to give in. If you give in once, your child will learn that if they push in just the right way, they can make you give in again.

4. Consider a coupon system.

If you want to be able to give your child a “day off,” consider giving them a single “coupon” good for one day off that they may use once during the season. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. You may be surprised to find this helps cut back in arguments and that your child may not even end up using the coupon by the end of the season.

If you choose to implement this system, it’s important to do so at the very beginning of the dance season and not in response to your dancer asking to skip class (see reason #3 for why).

5. Start a gratefulness practice.

Get your child thinking positively about dance by starting a gratefulness practice. Get a small notebook, and after each class, ask your child to write one thing they are grateful for about their dance lessons. The next time they ask to skip or quit, remind them to pull out their notebook to remember why they are grateful for their dance class.

6. Uncover underlying issues.

Sometimes, students may want to quit dance because they are struggling and are either feeling embarrassed or discouraged. Try to get to the root of why your child doesn’t want to go. Is it more than just wanting a day off? If so, your child may benefit from private ballet lessons or may benefit from extra practice time at home. Talk to your child’s dance teacher about your child’s challenges—they will be able to help you come up with a solution.

7. Model grit at home.

Finally, the best way to motivate your child to stick with ballet when they want to give up is to model commitment and grit at home. Are you prone to starting projects or activities and not finishing them? This can signal to your child that quitting partway through is a natural part of the process. If you fight them on quitting dance, but they see you quitting your projects, you might even set the standard that only grown-ups get to quit, exacerbating the behavior in the future. Instead, do your best to model grit and follow-through at home.

Talk about the challenges you gave when sticking with something, but follow it up with why you’re going to continue the activity anyway. For instance, “Mommy really didn’t want to do her morning run today because I was tired and really wanted to just start my workday. But I made a commitment to myself to complete this marathon training program, and I knew I would feel good after my run—and know how good it will feel to run my first marathon in 3 months. So I decided to go for my run anyway, and 10 minutes in, I was so glad I did because it felt great.”

Like most things, grit is easier said than done, but as your child’s biggest role model, what they see at home can have a huge influence on their behavior now and in the future.

8 (Surprising) Lessons Children’s Ballet Will Teach Your Child

When you sign your child up for children’s ballet, you may be thinking about helping your child pursue his or her passions in dance, getting exercise, or even just getting out of the house for a healthy extracurricular activity.

However, ballet is so much more than that.

Many former dancers will tell you that there are many life skills that they credit to ballet.

8 Benefits of Children’s Ballet

When your child starts children’s ballet, you can expect that they will learn not only classical ballet technique but also life lessons that they can carry with them through adulthood.

1 – Preparation

One of the things your child will learn in ballet is preparation. This goes beyond practicing at home and showing up to class prepared―though that’s important too. Ballet is all about preparation. Before each exercise, your child will make sure their feet are in the proper position, that their muscles are engaged, and that they’re focused on the exercise.

This ability to focus, prepare, and “show up” mentally for a task is one that will follow your child throughout adulthood, helping them to navigate the challenges they’ll face in life.

2 – Grace & Balance

Young children go through a lot of changes as they grow. They transition from bow-legged toddlers to knock-kneed children as their limbs lengthen and their bodies grow.

One of the most impactful things your child will learn in children’s ballet is balance and grace. They learn to engage their mind and muscles while developing strength and control. These lessons will apply not only to their physical movements, but to their emotional ones as well. Your child will learn that they can overcome challenges with strength, fortitude, and the right attitude.

3 – Enjoy Hard Work

Ballet takes discipline and strength. For many children, this is one of the first times they will practice and hone precise physical (and mental) skills. Most children starting children’s ballet have had little exposure to the sport outside seeing ballerinas on tv or on the stage. Your child will learn to find the limits of their bodies and minds and to strengthen themselves to grow past it―and to do so with a smile.

Because ballet, however hard, is fun (especially when you have a great ballet teacher), your child will learn that it can be a positive, rewarding experience to work hard and learn new things.

4 – Teamwork

Another thing your child will learn during children’s ballet is how to work together as a team. Being a ballet dancer requires teamwork. You must learn together with the other dancers, be in sync with your routines, and support each other.

5 – Attention to Detail

A surprising thing your child will learn during their ballet classes is attention to detail. Ballet is all about the details―the angle of the arms or position of the body, spacing from your fellow dancers, timing, and more. And all of this is done without talking. Your child will learn to pick up on visual cues from other dancers, audible cues from the music, and other small details that will help them complete their routines.

6 – Flourishing Under Pressure

Ballet, as well as other performance sports, are important for teaching children to perform under pressure. As much as we want to imagine our children will always be happy, positive, and carefree during their lives, the reality is that they will face stressful situations. Being able to keep their heads and act under pressure is a great skill to learn young to be able to handle challenging situations in the future.

7 – Accepting Feedback

It’s important for children and adults alike to be able to accept feedback and to learn from their mistakes―as well as the mistakes of others. Ballet is a challenging sport and requires discipline and precision. Your child will be receiving feedback from their teachers and will watch other children receiving the same. They’ll learn that not only is feedback normal, it’s an important part of the learning process.

Worried about your child’s ability to accept criticism? That’s all the more reason to register your child in ballet! A great ballet teacher takes cues from a child’s behavior and actions and is able to gently ease them into receiving criticism more openly.

8 – Respect for Themselves and Others

Your child will also learn respect for themselves and others. Children’s ballet is usually less strict than teen or company ballet and is more strict than preschool or toddler ballet. Your child is learning to respect the etiquette of the class and to respect their process of learning and progress in the classroom. They’ll learn to respect the other dancers in their journey of learning as well as learning to respect their teacher.
