Creative Ballet is a pre-ballet class for young students, typically between ages 3-6. This young, early introduction to ballet has several amazing benefits not only for the future development of young dancers, but academic, physical, and emotional development as well.

8 Top Benefits of Creative Ballet

As parents, we are under a lot of pressure to help develop our children’s skills, self-confidence, and interests—and sometimes it is surprising how early this begins! How can you be confident you are enrolling your child in the right activity and the right program?

No parent can see the future—and if you have older children, you know that interests ebb and flow and that what fascinates your child today may bore them to (literal) tears next week. Instead of trying to predict what activity your child will love int the long-term, it can be beneficial to find an activity with benefits that exceed the activity itself.

We’ve found that creative ballet, the early ballet classes taken as an early, age-appropriate introduction to ballet technique for young students, provides just this mix of benefits. Below, we share some of the top benefits our students experience from creative ballet classes.

1. Develop Confidence

One of the first things you’ll notice as you see your child progress in creative ballet is their burgeoning sense of self-confidence. Your little dancer, who may have been afraid to twirl when others were watching, will develop a glowing confidence as they’re introduced to more opportunities to dance with other children. They’ll learn to trust themselves and their ability to dance, as well as learning that it’s safe to express their passion for something—like ballet—in front of other people. The result is a more confident child with the mindset and skillset to continue growing self-confidence in the future.

2. Teamwork

Although ballet is often overlooked as a team sport, the reality is that all dancers have to work together to make choreography work. A child doing “their own thing” can disrupt the class or even a performance. Instead, students must learn to practice together, watch for each other on stage and in the studio, and to dance as a unit instead of an individual. For many young children, creative ballet is one of their first experiences putting teamwork into action.

3. Listen to Teacher

For our youngest creative ballet students, creative ballet classes are some of their first experiences listening to a teacher—or doing so without a parent by their side as in parent-child classes. Having the ability to listen to and follow teachers’ instructions has obvious benefits in educational applications, but it is also a beneficial skill for listening to coaches, team captains, parents (woohoo), or even future employers. The idea is that there is someone who knows something more than your child—and that if they listen, they can increase their personal knowledge and skills.

If you’re used to toddler power struggles, you know how this position can sometimes be misinterpreted by young children. In creative ballet, the group environment, novel studio atmosphere, and a genuine desire to learn to dance like the teacher and other students (we see this in almost every child with very little exception) encourages them to set aside the instinct to power struggle and to instead enjoy listening and learning.

4. Strength, Balance & Grace

Another reason parents choose to enroll their children in creative ballet at a young age is to help teach them balance and grace. Many sports teach strength, coordination, and balance, but ballet adds a level of grace that can be difficult to match in other settings. Children grow quickly and can often feel awkward and uncomfortable in their lengthening bodies. Ballet helps them learn to move more easily and gracefully, which can be beneficial for other sports as well for self-confidence.

5. Growth Mindset

Ballet teaches the all-important growth-mindset. Instead of thinking “I can’t do _______,” students learn to formulate the thoughts, “I’m practicing to learn ______,” and “if I practice, I can become great at ______.” Students in our Creative Ballet program are taught a variety of ballet techniques that are all age appropriate. At this young age, students are less likely to have the thought that they can’t do something, and Central Utah Ballet embraces that, extending their skills in a thoughtful and gentle way that helps reinforce that they can do anything with practice and patience. Students will see their skills progress—and parents will too.

6. Foundational Ballet Skills

Finally, creative ballet is not just a thoughtless activity designed to keep young children busy, it genuinely teaches important foundational ballet skills. Learning these skills early—and correctly—prevents young students from developing bad ballet habits that later have to be undone if they decide to pursue ballet further. More importantly, creative ballet provides students with a foundation upon which future skills can be built.

Starting your child in ballet classes at an early age will do wonders for their confidence, physical coordination, and posture. Ballet is also a holistic approach to life-long wellness for children, it also builds social skills, as well as mental strength and focus. We are going to list 5 main reasons what ballet does for a young child.

Confidence In Ballet

Ballet plays a huge part in building your child’s confidence. They learn how to control their bodies, and socialize with other students. Young dancers will learn how to conquer new dance moves and become more certain of their ability to apply themselves, work hard, and master the hard tasks put before them. Learning new dance moves is a hard and daunting task, and moving your body in ways it hasn’t moved before is difficult! So being able to accomplish the difficult dance move will do wonders for your child’s confidence!

Health And Well-Being

Along with learning how to properly strengthen their body, ballet teaches kids the basic ways to stay healthy. In ballet class they will learn how to stretch properly, flexibility practices, they will also learn how to discover physical limits and learn when their body is telling them “no” they can’t move that way just yet. It is so important that kids learn their limitations at a young age so they can avoid injury and establish healthy habits in ballet.

Lifelong Skills

Putting your child in ballet will teach them how to properly socialize. Putting them in group lessons is a great way to learn how to be a team player, by encouraging others, telling your fellow ballet classmates that they’re doing a great job! Ballet has been shown to encourage empathy and better connections with others due to the synchronicity that is learned. Starting ballet at an early age will help motivate kids to stay active throughout their adult life.

Brain Development

Learning different routines and having to memorize all of the different movies in ballet is great for your child’s brain development and their mental strength. Ballet requires memory training and coordination. This will help them when it comes to their school work, and having to memorize words, and numbers. Creative movement is beneficial to a child’s growth and development through dancing, it will awaken their inner creativity.

Discipline And Structure

Having rules to follow outside of the home is a great skill for your child to learn! They will use these skills all throughout their life. These skills include:

Listening

Following Directions

Not Talking Over The Dance Teacher

Taking Turns

Sitting Or Standing Still

Learning Manners

Final Thoughts

Here at Central Utah Ballet, we offer classes starting for young children and adults (it’s never too late to challenge yourself as an adult and learn new things) We can help your child develop into a great young dancer and carry on the skillsets into their young adult lives.

As a parent it can be hard sometimes to decide what you would like your child to learn outside of school. We try to factor in what would be best for our children and their long-term growth, as well as what they’re particularly interested in (at the moment). Ballet is a holistic approach to life-long wellness for children. Many people choose to put their child in ballet for its physical benefits, such as coordination, balance, and posture, but the benefits go far beyond that.

4 Reasons to Put Your Child in Ballet

One of the best reasons to put your child in ballet is because they love it! However, if your child isn’t sure what they’re passionate about (or if they’re too young to decide between ballet and karate), then parents sometimes have to step in and make the decision. We love ballet for so many reasons, but here are 4 great reasons you should put your child in ballet:

1. Improves Physical Coordination and Posture

The core principles of ballet focus on balance, coordination, strength, and posie. Every exercise that they do in dance teaches them how to strengthen and move their body, which creates a strong and capable dancer. To be able to dance correctly you need good posture and a strong core! This is great for your child’s overall health. Dancing is a set of physical actions – moving different parts of your body in opposing directions, coordinating their movements while simultaneously stretching and controlling their muscles. Ballet will help them to develop coordination, balance, good posture, and more.

2. Strengthens Mental Acuity and Focus

Ballet calls for brain power! While your child is working hard to coordinate their feet to skip, their brains. Your child’s brain is constantly building new neural pathways to make all this happen, which increases neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity improves learning, memory, and comprehension.

3. Builds Social Skills

When taking ballet classes, your child is around other children socializing. A lot of students will help others learn a step if the teacher is helping someone else. This is great for communication and building confidence while being around others. Listening to one other, accepting someone, creative ideas, and being encouraged to develop their own ideas through movement is a unique part of ballet classes.

4. Instills Confidence

Performing on stage in front of a big audience is no small task. Some kids love entertaining and performing in front of others, while others are more timid and shy. The confidence to overcome those fears is built through practicing ballet and performing in front of others! It is a wonderful experience to see them come in shy and come out strong and confident. Even if the performance is less than perfect, students learn to appreciate their successes and learn from their mistakes.

Final Thoughts

Anything you put your child in can be intimidating and scary for them at first. You can

always have them try a class at Central Utah Ballet to see if this is something that they are interested in doing. Here is a list of our instructors and classes we have. You can give us a call and we can help choose what’s best for your child!

“What is the youngest age a child can start ballet?” is a question hotly debated by experts and parents, and different dance schools often have different answers. Who knows best? What makes one dance company better than another? To help you make the most practical decision for your child, we compiled a short guide with the key information you need.

What is the Youngest Age to Start Ballet?

While some ballet studios will offer classes to children as young as one or two years old, these are typically “parent-child” classes that don’t necessarily teach ballet technique. Instead, these classes are more likely to be used to stimulate the child and get their little bodies moving. The youngest age to start ballet is more likely to be between 3-4 years old, when the child has enough control over their bodies to start learning introductory ballet technique.

Ballet Classes for 3 & 4 Year Olds

Many ballet studios offer ballet lessons for children as young as 3 years old. Your child won’t be able to learn how to pirouette just yet, but these classes can give them a head start in understanding and building a foundation for ballet technique.

Beginning ballet as young as 3 or 4 years old helps children with their communication skills and their ability to move in time with the music. It helps them learn to use certain areas of their bodies and muscles, and will help them develop introductory skills they will later use in ballet.

Some dance studios will not offer ballet classes to children under the age of 6 due to potential injury, as this is a key period of growth and development. This is why it’s important to find a ballet studio with experienced instructors teaching younger age groups if you want your child to start ballet early.

How Do You Know When Your Child is Ready to Learn Ballet?

Dancers are made—they’re not born. Mikhail Baryshnikov, a renowned dancer and choreographer who didn’t start ballet until the age of 11, is credited with this claim. You can have your child start ballet as early as 3 and see how they like it, or you can wait until they’re a little older and see if they have a true interest in practicing ballet. The important thing to remember is that it is never a good idea to force a child into a sport they won’t enjoy.

There really isn’t a “right” age to start, so your choice can be based on your preference and that of your child. If you are on the fence about it, you could see if a dance studio near you offers a trial class—that way, you can see if your child enjoys ballet with no commitment.

How Do I Find the Right Ballet Studio?

It’s crucial to do your research before signing your child up for lessons with a ballet studio. Talk to the studio owner and teachers about what you and your child want. Do you want a classical program that helps prepare your child for future roles, auditions, or scholarships? Or are you looking for laid-back classes to keep your child entertained after school?

If you’re booking for a more serious program, explore the growth opportunities of the studio. Do they offer high-level performances? Audition opportunities? Are they affiliated with any summer ballet intensives or other training opportunities with professional choreographers and instructors? Check the teachers’ credentials as well–many studios will provide ballet teacher bios online. Did the teacher train at a well-known school? What certifications or degrees do they have?

Location is also important. It’s best to choose a studio close by if your child is going more than once a week so you don’t have to drive long distances.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide when you want your child to start ballet. The most important thing is to do your research and find the best dance studio for your child, considering their age and how serious they are about ballet.

If you have already signed your child up for a pre-ballet class, congratulations! Your child is on their way to being better able to express themselves, connect with others, and find joy in dance. If not, perhaps you’re here to find out exactly what pre-ballet is or what benefits a toddler or preschooler might get out of these pre-ballet classes.

What is Pre-Ballet?

Pre-ballet is an introductory ballet class for young children. These classes are a great way for your child to learn creative movement and basic ballet techniques they can build upon in future classes.

In pre-ballet, students will learn basic techniques and terminology such as the 5 basic ballet positions, how to use a bar, and good ballet posture. While pre-ballet is not as rigid and structured as later ballet classes, it does introduce many early concepts of disciplined dance that will support later ballet progress.

Most importantly, however, pre-ballet offers a fun and engaging introduction to ballet that helps young children develop a genuine passion for dance.

Preparing For Your Child’s First Class

It’s important to buy your child proper ballet slippers that fit snugly but are not too small. Their feet should be able to relax, fully extended in the flat. Traditional ballet shoes are leather or canvas on top with a suede bottom. Since children in pre-ballet grow quickly, they are not typically expected to wear top-quality footwear–inexpensive ballet slippers work just fine for those quickly-growing feet.

It’s also important that your child is potty trained and you let them know what to expect for their first class. Tell them who their instructor is and what they will expect from your child. Let them know there will be other children learning ballet for the first time just like them. Tell them to expect that they will do some fun stretches at the beginning to warm up, and talk about some of the things you think they’ll love most about their new pre-ballet class.

Benefits of Pre-Ballet

Whether you expect your child to continue with a passion for ballet or simply hope to give them a new way to wear off some energy during the week, pre-ballet offers several benefits to young dancers:

Creativity. We love pre-ballet for toddlers and preschoolers because it helps to foster creativity in a structured and engaging environment. If your child has difficulty expressing creativity, pre-ballet can help open them up to a more creative mindset.

Balance & Flexibility. Young children grow quickly, which can mean they often experience stages of clumsiness as they adapt to their new, longer limbs and changing centers of gravity. The skills children learn in pre-ballet can help them develop strength, balance, and flexibility to more confidently control physical movement as they grow.

Team Participation. For many children, pre-ballet is their first foray into a team sport. They will learn to be aware of the other children moving around them, how to work together in group practice and choreography, and the importance of remaining focused and on-task in a group.

Ballet Basics. Finally, pre-ballet also offers a great foundational introduction to ballet. In a high-quality pre-ballet program, you can expect that your child will be introduced to basic ballet terms, skills, and techniques that they will be able to build upon in future classes.

Even at a young age, children who dance will gain strength, confidence, and even more emotional awareness when they are nurtured in safe environments. There are simply too many benefits of pre-ballet to name them all in this blog post, so jump over to this blog article to read more!

Three or four years old may seem early to start a child in ballet, but there are many new skills a child will learn in these classes.

5 Things Children Learn in Toddler Ballet Classes

There are many reasons parents enroll their toddlers in toddler ballet classes. Sometimes they are hoping these classes will help to engage their child and help them wear off energy. Other times, they’re focused on helping the child to develop balance and physical strength. Some parents may choose ballet to help their child engage in social opportunities, and others may be excited for the chance for their child to perform and develop confidence. Whatever the reason, there are several things your child will learn in toddler ballet classes.

1. Early Ballet Foundations

While your child won’t come out of toddler ballet classes with advanced technical classical ballet skills, they will have built foundations for these skills later. They will understand introductory concepts such as early posture skills and basic vocabulary. They will also learn ballet positions, how to stretch and warm up their bodies, and how to use a ballet barre.

2. Interacting with Instructors

For many toddlers, a toddler ballet class is one of their first experiences interacting with someone in a leadership role who is not their parent or caregiver. This is an important time of their lives! They will be simultaneously learning how to take instruction from someone other than an adult and doing so while surrounded by other children and taking part in fun physical activities.

3. Balance, Strength & Flexibility

Although your child will not be learning advanced ballet skills, they will be getting weekly exercise that will help them build strength and flexibility. Toddlers are still developing, learning to control their ever-growing bodies. Ballet helps them to practice balance, strength, and flexibility to better handle the future growth they will experience.

4. Social Skills

An early ballet class is also a great place for your child to practice early social skills. It may be their first experience in a group learning setting without a parent—and may be their first time working together with a group of children their age to complete common goals. Toddlers will learn how to pay attention to the teacher even if another child may be distracted. They will learn how to interact with other children on the stage, handle minor conflicts such as taking turns or getting their teacher’s attention, and more.

5. Confidence

Since toddler ballet classes introduce students to new skills, it’s also a great way to build confidence. Children love to learn new things—and love to be praised by parents and other adults. Your child will enjoy practicing the skills they learned each week and hearing positive feedback from their teacher as their skills progress. They’ll also have fun showing off their new dance moves to you! Ballet gives your child an opportunity to build confidence in trying new things in the presence of other children or adults (which is important for preschool and other challenges they will face soon) and may even have the opportunity to test their newfound confidence in short on-stage or in-studio performances.

From hip-hop, tap or creative movement, the options for starting your child in dance classes are endless. If the goal is to give them a few hours to get out their jitters, then perhaps what you sign them up for doesn’t matter. However, if the dream is for your cherub to angelically sashay across the stage in a tutu on a breeze of glittery gauze then ballet is the obvious choice. But behind the sparkling stage performances, are there ulterior benefits to starting your 3-year-old in pre-ballet? There certainly are!

What Type of Dance Lessons are Best for a 3-Year-Old?

For three-year-olds, pre-ballet classes can have great benefits. These include helping to improve their confidence, giving them a physical outlet and helping them to gain control over their growing bodies, and strengthening their cognition.

Pre-Ballet sets your three-year-old up for success in many ways. This can come in the form of physical and mental benefits as well as social benefits. By learning ballet before any other dance form, your child will have the foundations to be successful wherever they put their kinetic energy in the future. In the pre-ballet classes at Central Utah Ballet, your toddler or preschooler will develop spatial and cognitive awareness in the introduction of our pre-ballet syllabus and vocabulary.

Ballet Is The Foundation Of Dance

It’s not just tulle and feathers. Ballet teaches alignment, values, techniques, and musicality, all of which are transferable to other dance styles like modern fusion, jazz, and contemporary. Even if your child doesn’t fall in love with ballet, all the skills they learned in the pre-ballet classes will make them more successful in future athletic or dance careers. This is also true of all the physical abilities your child will gain in pre-ballet. They will have a head start when it comes to flexibility, strength, focus, discipline, and confidence!

Socializing

Though it may seem like a given, pre-ballet is a great way to introduce your child to other children. “From 2-5 years old,” Sally Beville Hunter, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of child and family studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville explains, “children need to learn what is fair and what is right, and they learn that from being with other children.”

In our pre-ballet classrooms, children learn to respect space with other children, take turns, and share the spotlight. As they make friends in class, they will have a leg up (sometimes literally!) informing those communication skills early. This can equate to lifetime relationships and a substantially higher quality of life. No exaggeration here, “the single biggest predictor of human happiness is the quality of [a person’s] relationships.” – Aron Arthur, psychologist.

Creativity And Storytelling

According to the Australian Parenting site Raising Children, “Creative play helps toddlers develop emotionally, physically, mentally and socially.” And what better way to do it than through dance? Through ballet activities such as mood dancing, when music is put on and dancers are asked to express how it makes them feel, toddlers are able to learn healthy ways to express and work through their emotions. Through dance as a form for telling stories, children are better able to learn empathy and can experience fantasy. All around ballet as a creative outlet is a no-brainer!

Next Steps

If you are looking for a type of dance that will give your child the most benefits and life tools, it’s very possible you’re looking at it! But don’t take our word for it, have your child try it for themself. At Central Utah Ballet, we put our most experienced instructors in charge of the pre-ballet program so your child will be in the best possible care. If you’d like to read about additional health benefits not covered here, discover our article about what age toddlers can join pre-ballet!

If you have a son interested in ballet, you might have wondered if you should enroll him in ballet lessons. Though supporting our children in their passions should be intuitive, it does not mean that parents don’t worry about the implications of certain choices. Will he be teased or outcast by his peers for breaking gender stereotypes? Will he be the only boy in his dance classes? Or worst of all… Will he have to wear pink?

All hyperbole aside, these concerns and feelings of insecurity are valid. As a parent, you want what’s best for your child so with a little more digging into the subject, let’s discover why the pros of putting your son in ballet outweigh the cons.

Should You Put Your Son in Ballet?

There are many physical, social, and mental benefits to putting your son in ballet. From learning discipline and focus to mastering physical skills including strength, balance, and flexibility, there are many reasons to put your son in ballet, if he’s interested. In addition, there are several scholarship and education opportunities for male ballet dancers.

Reasons To Enroll Your Son in Ballet

“Ballet is not just for the career dancer but is a tool for those seeking a holistic approach to their physical well-being. It will teach discipline, strength, balance, flexibility, problem-solving, respect, focus, and many more skills that translate far beyond the studio.” -Benjamin Raymant, Artist with Hale Center Theatre

There are undoubtedly several physical and mental benefits to enrolling your son in ballet. However, one might argue that many of these benefits are akin to any other sport that physically exercises the body. While this may be true, it also does not begin to scratch the surface when compared to the economic benefits of ballet for boys. Considering that male dancers are scarce in the dance world, there are extensive opportunities regarding scholarships, education, and career opportunities if you put your son in ballet.

The Physical, Mental, and Social Benefits

Regardless of gender, ballet teaches students discipline, coordination, flexibility, and assists with injury prevention. It is widely known that football players practice ballet for this in particular. With the confidence it instills comes more character-building self-awareness and maturity, not to mention other life skills such as time management and self-discipline.

In regard to the social benefits of dance, Ryan Hatch, Artist with Utah Metropolitan Ballet, puts it like this “Becoming a male ballet dancer means: learning to work hard, be strong, and communicate with your partner. Traditionally, in a pas de deux, the man and the woman are telling a story. To be successful, the partnership needs to learn how to work together to achieve the same end goal.”

When we teach our sons to dance, we teach them that they are capable of more than they knew in every aspect of their lives, from school and social interaction.

Click here for more reading on the benefits of dance.

The Extensive Opportunities

The Wisconsin Literacy Resource Network has noted that “Most ballets have almost equal parts male and female roles. But in the U.S., boys who want to do ballet are hard to come by.” Many parents are boggled by the immense amount of doors that ballet has opened to their sons, from scholarships and educational opportunities to travel and more. In addition to meeting people from all walks of life, your son might also get multiple performance opportunities.

It’s Becoming More Popular

If you are still debating whether putting your son in ballet is the best move, consider that male dancers are becoming more socially accepted and celebrated. Additionally, all the aforementioned health benefits of dance, including confidence and grace, make it possible for male dancers to increase the awareness of their peers that dance is a genderless sport. There’s no reason men cannot be dancers and they are starting to become more common in the profession.

To answer one of the questions at the beginning of the article: Will my son be the only boy in his dance class? It’s likely he will not be! Will he be able to find a male teacher or even a class of all boys? Though it’s not guaranteed, those types of classes are becoming more common.

“In my experience, one of the biggest things that helped me stay in dance was exposure to professional male dancers and teachers. In my pre-teens, I got to work with Jeff Amsden, former faculty of Tremaine Dance Convention. Seeing a professional male ballet dancer was really eye-opening to me. This was one of the things that helped me to understand that boys have a place in ballet. It is very important to educate boys and show them that ballet is for everybody. Educating boys and giving them role models to look up to is crucial to ending the stereotype that ballet is not for boys.” -Ryan Hatch, Artist with Utah Metropolitan Ballet

Let Boys Dance!

To surmise, in addition to the plethora of mental and physical benefits, there are limitless opportunities for male dancers that commit themselves to the art. As the number of boys in ballet grows, it is likely that he will make lifelong friends and have a healthier, more creative outlook on life. If your child wants to dance, let him follow his passion!
